Panamax

Panamax refers to a class of oil tanker smaller than Aframax.

Panamax tankers are in the range of 60-80 DWT. They are used for crude oil and refined product shipment. If moving product, they are often called LR1.

The name comes from the size limit created by the original design of the Panama Canal.
