Lightering

Lightering is the use of a small tanker or barge to move a cargo between a larger ship and shore. This can be either at loading or unloading. Typically this is done to allow use of a ship that is too large to dock directly. This adds to the cost of shipping, but it can be more than offset by the savings from using the larger ship.
